Common MFP Challenges

MFP issues happen all of the time. Whether you use your office’s MFP often or only occasionally, you expect it to work when you need to print something. Unfortunately, MFPs can be finicky and pose issues at the worst times in your production cycle.

MFP Issues

Paper Jams
Paper jams are one of the most common MFP issues that our customers face. They are usually caused by a buildup of dust and grime. They may also occur when the rollers are worn, when there is too much paper in the printer’s tray, or when the paper has been stored in a humid place. The best way to avoid paper jams is to buy high quality paper and store it in a dry environment and to limit the amount of paper that you put into paper trays.

Ink Printing in a Streaky or Faded Manner
The printer, ink or toner cartridge, or paper can all cause print quality to go up or down. Your printer may need to be serviced or checked if this is a continuous issue. If you don’t use your printer often, it is possible that the toner has settled. You can check your ink or toner cartridge on your own by removing it and lightly swaying it from side to side to try to get the tone to re-settle. If your printer uses ink, it is possible that your ink has dried out. Finally, check to make sure that you are using the correct type of paper for your printer.

Software Problems
Check all of your drivers to make sure that they are correctly installed. If you complete this step and are still having issues, you can proceed to uninstall your printer. Then, disconnect it and install it again. Software issues tend to be more complex and they are one of the many reasons why having a managed IT Services and Support team is helpful.

Wrinkled Printing
If your pages are wrinkling as they print and causing your words and images to appear skewed then there is most likely an issue with the paper’s alignment in the tray. Check the paper tray to make sure that the paper is lined up correctly to make sure that your documents are printing as you would like them to print.

Slow Printing
Although slow printing does not prevent you from printing what you need, it is an MFP issue that will make printing inefficient and frustrating. It is usually caused by mechanical issues in your printer or printing software that is not correctly set up. Also, printers have quality settings. Draft mode is the preferred choice for printing many pages quickly, so if your printer is printing slowly, check the settings to make sure that it is in draft mode.
